Partnership. Purpose. Progress.

A message from DANA President & CEO Sheila Bravo and Board Chair Kathleen Hawkins.

In 2024, DANA completed a new strategic plan — a milestone shaped by insights from more than 70 stakeholders across Delaware’s nonprofit community. Through this collaborative process, our Board and staff took a fresh look at DANA’s mission, vision, values, guiding principles, strategic outcomes, and initiatives.

This reflection led us to adopt a new mission statement: To shape and advance the systems and conditions that empower nonprofits to amplify their impact throughout Delaware.

While this new mission does not alter DANA’s core programs, it affirms that our work in influencing the broader systems which affect nonprofits is equally as vital as the training and consulting services we offer.

During the next five years, DANA will focus on initiatives that:

Develop leadership competence and confidence within nonprofits.

Support the efficacy, integrity, and sustainability of nonprofit operations and infrastructure.

Advance a healthy, community-focused nonprofit sector.

Promote and influence the broader conditions that enable a thriving nonprofit ecosystem.

A key pillar of our public policy agenda is advocating for fair compensation from policymakers — ensuring nonprofits are funded to cover the full cost of delivering critical community services. Throughout the year, DANA’s IMPACT Delaware Conference, Communities of Practice, and member events continue to foster learning, connection, and collaboration across the sector. Our customized consulting and coaching services help nonprofit boards, leaders, and teams innovate, plan, and strengthen their internal operations. In addition, DANA’s Nonprofit Accelerator and our on-demand and virtual workshops are designed to build the skills nonprofit leaders and staff need to maximize community impact.

As we look to the future, DANA remains steadfast in its vision: a Delaware nonprofit sector empowered to achieve an inclusive, thriving, and vibrant community.

Yet, as we reflect on the past year, we recognize the rapid shifts in federal policy, funding, and the reinterpretation of regulations and laws that have reshaped the landscape for nonprofits in just a few short months. In the face of these changes, DANA remains unwavering in its commitment to champion the impact, integrity, and resilience of Delaware’s nonprofit sector.

Now more than ever, partnership and collective action are critical. Together with philanthropy, state government, and each of you, we will stand strong, advocate boldly, and ensure that nonprofits have the support and voice they need to thrive.

The road ahead may be uncertain — but united, we are confident we will forge a stronger, more vibrant future for our communities. We look forward to working alongside you in the coming year to turn this vision into action.

Sincerely,

Sheila and Kathleen

“DANA has been so active on our behalf in advocacy, and we use their messaging and talking points in our own individual advocacy. We look to them as the lead for speaking about our work in the nonprofit sector.”

“I would say to any agency that has not been a member of DANA to become a member. You will be given access to how to effectively advocate for your agency and the clients that you serve.”

“For me it’s been a wonderful experience. They have given me the tools to be able to move our organization much further than I would have been able to without the support of DANA.”

2024 Notable Achievements

Nonprofits gain free access to board recruitment program

DANA launched a revised Board Connections program available to members at no cost. Board Connections allows members the opportunity to submit their open board positions to be matched with board-trained individuals from the corporate world and from the community our nonprofits serve.

The program also includes a Board Fundamentals training course for board candidates, preparing them with the essentials to become a new board member. DANA references the interest provided by prospective candidates to identify a match between prospective board members and nonprofits. Once connections are made, DANA continues to offer support through training, mentoring, consultation, and networking opportunities.

“The Board Connections sessions have played a crucial role in increasing board engagement and fostering a greater bond between the Board Chair and the Founder/CEO of Wow Science. The structured activities, collaborative planning, and informal networking opportunities have all contributed to a more cohesive and effective board.”

Patricia Grant
Board Chair
Wow Science

Three-year program strengthens nonprofits in under-invested areas

In 2023, DANA launched a three-year program that provides participating nonprofits with the organizational support they need to make a broader impact on their historically under-invested communities. Participating organizations receive technical assistance, coaching, consulting, and connections to strengthen leadership, enhance internal systems, foster success, and expand impact.

The first cohort of seven nonprofits will complete their program in 2026. The second cohort of five nonprofits began their journey in the fall of 2024. Critical components that each cohort explores include organizational assessments, workshops, customized consulting and coaching, executive peer groups, and technical support.

“After five years in business, with no nonprofit experience, we sometimes struggled to transform ideas into actions, but the Accelerator helped get our finances organized, supported our transition from a founding board to an experienced one, understood how important our mission of supporting foster youth was to us and the kids, and helped focus our priorities around that.

Our dream of a Little Free Store for foster youth is now a reality and we’re granting over 1,000 wishes per year and have about 10,000 items in stock, more than half of those donated. In just 18 months, Accelerator has improved aspects of Fostering Wishes Foundation that would’ve taken us years.”
